Biggest Recall in Company's History: Toyota

Two weeks ago we brought you the story of the potentially defective Lexus floor mat that allegedly jammed the accelerator on, killing a family in the USA in a terrifying 190km/h smash. The family made an emergency call telling police how they could not slow the vehicle down.

Last week Toyota decided to recall almost four million cars amid fears the problem could recur.

The recall will be the biggest in Toyota's history. Four million cars is a traffic jam stretching from Sydney to Perth, four lanes wide - so it's unlikely the problem will be rectified overnight.

So far there's no suggestion of the problem manifesting itself here in Australia. The US Federal road regulator said it has on file 102 reports of stuck accelerators on Toyotas. Eight models are affected - including the Camry and Prius.

And remember, if this happens to you, you can always just turn the ignition off: no more spark, no more problem. Remember to back the key off just one click - don't lock the steering or things could get equally ugly.
